There are few things in life that compare with the joy of a good game of capture the flag. However, one of those things that does is Castle Wars in Old School RuneScape.
This is one of the most popular minigames within OSRS. Introduced by Jagex in 2004, it has only grown in popularity. So much so that it was made free-to-play in 2017.
If you’re ready for some fast-paced, challenging, and fun interactions with other players, then Castle Wars is exactly what the Mage ordered.
If you’ve played capture the flag before, then you know the basic premise of this game – do whatever it takes to protect your own castle and flag from the enemy while attacking and taking your enemy’s castle, getting their flag, and returning it to your own castle. Every time you can successfully capture a flag and return it to your own castle, you get one point.
A game of Castle Wars lasts 20 minutes. The team with the most points at the end of that time is the victor. One thing to note – this is a “safe” game, meaning that when you die, you won’t lose your items (which is really nice).
It sounds simple on the surface, but this minigame has a lot of strategy.
One of the most effective strategies to protect your flag is to block the opposing team by any means possible. This includes all sorts of options like collapsing tunnels below ground, putting up barricades, and making sure any door available is shut and locked down tight.
Obviously, another strategy is to just take out enemy players. Keep in mind, they will be respawning to the starting area, so this strategy may require a bit more work. However, it’s a necessary thing so you don’t get swarmed.
Castle Wars Tickets
While this is a super fun game in and of itself, sweet victory comes with additional benefits – Castle Wars Tickets. These are basically currency that you can use to get rewards like decorative armor and other cool things.
Winning a round of Castle Wars gets you 3 tickets, a draw gets you 2 tickets, and a consolation prize of 1 ticket if you lose.
Winning At Castle Wars
Before you jump right into a round of Castle Wars, it’s good to take a minute and assess your skills, abilities, and combat level. If you’re at a high combat level, you’re going to have a way easier time accomplishing the necessary fighting to win the round. However, if you’re not quite there yet, you can still have a blast in this minigame, it’d just be wiser to stick to a more defensive playing style for now.
Another thing to consider is who is on your team. Your chances of winning will be vastly increased if you have at least one Ancient Magic wielder. These guys do more than their fair share of the fighting. Using ice spells, they can freeze opponents, giving Melee players an easy target. If you can find someone with dual ranging fight skills, that is also a huge plus.
All in all, Castle Wars is an extremely fun minigame and a great way to get some cool armor!
